The Federal Trade Commission is investigating TikTok's data and security practices, which could result in a settlement or legal action against the company, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday that he will put together an investor group to buy TikTok after the House passed a bill that would ban the popular video app in the U.S. if its China-based owner does not sell its stake.
From the beginning, TikTok has only been meant for non-Chinese markets and is not available in mainland China.
There are a number of challenges including a six-month deadline to get it done.
The bill would require the Chinese company ByteDance to sell off its stake in the social media company within 165 days or be removed from U.S. app stores. The short video service is popular among young social media users and currently has over 150 million U.S. users.
A bill that could lead to a ban of TikTok in the United States is expected to pass the House on Wednesday as lawmakers act on concerns that the company’s ownership structure is a threat to national security.
A bill is quickly gaining support in the House, and it could result in the popular video-sharing app TikTok being unavailable in the United States. Lawmakers are worried about the possibility of the platform surveilling and manipulating Americans.
