The bill’s sponsor wants to “send a message” that LGBTQ+ issues are not appropriate.
Alabama state legislators are moving forward with a proposal to stop discussions or teaching about gender identity or sexual orientation in public schools up to 12th grade, going beyond the existing law that covers up to 5th grade. The House Education Policy Committee is advancing the proposal, which now goes to the Alabama House of Representatives for a full vote.
Teachers and students can now say gay — as long as it’s not part of official classroom instruction.
