The General Assembly has endorsed the first United Nations resolution on artificial intelligence. The objective is to ensure that the powerful new technology benefits all nations, upholds human rights and is “safe, secure and trustworthy.” The resolution, sponsored by the United States, was adopted by consensus without a vote, meaning it has the support of all 193 U.N. member nations. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated last week that the resolution’s adoption would be a “historic step forward’ in promoting the safe use of AI. He told The Associated Press that the resolution “would represent global support for a baseline set of principles for the development and use of AI.”

The well-liked character actor M. Emmet Walsh has passed away at the age of 88. Walsh’s manager Sandy Joseph says he died in Vermont on Tuesday. Walsh appeared in over 100 films including “Blood Simple,” “Blade Runner,” “Straight Time,” and “The Jerk.” His most famous role was as a corrupt Texas private investigator in “Blood Simple,” the first film by Joel and Ethan Coen, who specifically wrote the part for Walsh. His characters were often from the South, but Walsh actually grew up near the U.S.-Canadian border in Vermont. He started acting in films in his late 30s and continued working into his 80s.
