The New York City Marathon may soon need to pay a fee to cross the bridge, just like all other people who travel across it. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is asking the New York Road Runners, who organize the prestigious race held on the first Sunday in November, to give about $750,000 for using the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The organization that supervises New York’s bridges and tunnels says the fee is the approximate amount of money lost from tolls when the bridge is closed. However, the Road Runners argue that the MTA makes more money from increased public transportation usage during the marathon week.
