Not many strong earthquakes happen on the East Coast. Since 1950, the United States Geological Survey has recorded only about 20 quakes with a magnitude above 4.5, while there have been over 1,000 on the West Coast. On Friday, people on the East Coast felt a 4.8-magnitude earthquake near Lebanon, New Jersey, with weak shaking felt as far away as Baltimore and the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. No serious injuries or major damage have been reported.
