Experts in brain injury are warning against making conclusions based on the newly released and limited information about the Army reservist who killed 18 people last year in Maine’s deadliest mass shooting. Researchers at Boston University who examined a sample of Robert Card’s brain tissue announced that they found signs of traumatic brain injury, including degeneration in the nerve fibers that allow communication between different areas of the brain. Card is believed to have been exposed to repeated minor blasts as an Army hand grenade instructor. It is not known if this caused his brain injury and what role the injury played in his worsening mental health. An Army spokesperson has expressed worry about the lab findings and detailed new efforts to protect other soldiers from blast injuries.
