U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that a Texas law allowing state authorities to arrest and deport migrants who have entered the country illegally is unconstitutional. Mayorkas made the remarks Thursday during a joint news conference with Guatemala President Bernardo Arévalo in the Guatemalan capital. Mayorkas said “We firmly believe that SB4 (the Texas law) is unconstitutional as a matter of law and we hope and are confident that the courts will definitively strike it down.” A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments on the Texas law Wednesday, but did not make a decision. The law is currently on hold.
