Putin prolongs control in predetermined Russian election after strongest crackdown since Soviet era
Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to lead Russia in a landslide election where the result was never uncertain. He stated his determination to move further into Ukraine and made new threats against the West. Following the harshest crackdown on opposition since Soviet times, it was evident from the earliest results that Putin’s almost 25-year rule would continue with a fifth term, giving him six more years in power. Nonetheless, Russians responded to a call to oppose Putin's oppression and his war in Ukraine by attending polling stations at noon on Sunday. After nearly all the precincts were tallied on Monday, election officials announced that Putin had obtained a record number of votes.
