The famous old cherry tree known as Stumpy, and over 100 other cherry trees, will be cut down as part of a multiyear restoration of their Tidal Basin home during this year’s cherry blossom celebrations in Washington. Crews will start replacing the crumbling seawall around the Tidal Basin in early summer, which is the area around the Jefferson Memorial with the highest concentration of cherry trees. After the project is completed, 277 cherry trees will be planted as replacements.
