However, when used improperly, these tactics can result in death, as seen in the case of George Floyd in 2020. An investigation led by The Associated Press discovered that over a decade, more than 1,000 individuals died after police restrained them using non-lethal force. Medical officials attributed the force to about half the cases. In other instances, officers did not follow best safety practices, which led to fatal outcomes. These deadly encounters occurred in nearly every state and affected individuals from diverse backgrounds. However, the impact disproportionately affected Black Americans.

Vice President Kamala Harris stated that government agencies using AI tools must ensure these tools do not put the rights and safety of the American people at risk. By December, every agency must establish specific measures to oversee activities such as facial recognition screenings at airports and the use of AI tools for managing the electric grid or assessing mortgages and home insurance.

The total solar eclipse expected on April 8 already is inspiring school lessons in science, literacy and culture. Some schools in or near the path of totality also are organizing group viewings for students to experience the awe of daytime darkness and learn about the astronomy behind it together. Dennis Schatz, a former president of the National Science Teaching Association, encourages educators to use the eclipse as “a teachable moment.” But the timing of the eclipse, around dismissal time for some in its path, means many schools will be closed for the day so that students aren’t stuck on buses or in crowds expected to gather.
