A new Environmental Protection Agency rule requires over 200 chemical plants across the country to decrease toxic emissions that could lead to cancer. Officials state that this rule, announced on Tuesday, aligns with President Joe Biden's dedication to environmental justice by offering health protections to communities affected by industrial pollution from chemicals. The rule is applicable to facilities in Texas, Louisiana, the Ohio River Valley, West Virginia, the upper South and several other areas. This rule will also benefit a predominantly Black town in Louisiana that the EPA Administrator Michael Regan visited in 2021. The Denka Performance Elastomer in LaPlace, Louisiana, which is the largest emitter of chloroprene in the U.S., will need to lower its emissions. However, Denka argues that it has followed air permitting regulations and opposes the EPA's action.
