The University of Edinburgh announced that Nobel prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs, who suggested the existence of a sub-atomic particle known as the Higgs boson, has passed away at the age of 94. Higgs proposed the existence of the particle in 1964. However, it was nearly 50 years before its existence could be confirmed at a particle collider in Switzerland called the Large Hadron Collider. Higgs' work assists scientists in understanding one of the most fundamental mysteries of the universe: how the Big Bang created something out of nothing 13.7 billion years ago. Higgs, alongside Francois Englert of Belgium, won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work.
