New research suggests that some cases of Alzheimer’s may be caused by having two copies of a single gene
For the first time, researchers have identified a genetic form of late-in-life Alzheimer’s disease. Most cases of the mind-robbing disease occur after age 65. A gene called APOE4 has long been considered a key risk factor. But new research says if people inherit two copies of that gene it’s not just a risk — it appears to be the underlying cause. About 15% of Alzheimer’s patients are thought to carry the gene pair. Scientists say the distinction could have implications for both research and treatment. The findings were published Monday in Nature Medicine.

Columbia University has announced the cancellation of its university-wide commencement ceremony after weeks of pro-Palestinian protests. Smaller school-based ceremonies will still take place this week and next. Officials at the Ivy League school in New York City stated on Monday that they would “forego the university-wide ceremony that is scheduled for May 15” and instead focus on school-level graduation ceremonies. Campus protests have emerged throughout the U.S. They come from the conflict that started when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel in October.
