A 12-year-old student shot at a secondary school in southern Finland, resulting in the death of one person and serious injuries to two other students. The police reported that they later caught the suspect. Heavily armed police surrounded the lower secondary school, where about 800 students are located, in the city of Vantaa, near the capital city, Helsinki, on Tuesday morning. Both the suspect and the victims were 12 years old. The suspect was apprehended in the Helsinki area later on Tuesday with a handgun in his possession. The gun used in the shooting was a registered handgun that belonged to the suspect’s relative. In Finland, the minimum age for criminal responsibility is 15 years, so the suspect cannot be formally arrested.

Inmates in New York are taking legal action against the state corrections department for deciding to put prisons on lockdown during the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8. The lawsuit was filed on Friday in federal court in upstate New York, claiming that the eclipse holds religious significance for many people and that the lockdown infringes on their constitutional rights to practice their religions. The six plaintiffs, who have different religious beliefs, are imprisoned at the Woodbourne Correctional Facility. A spokesperson for the corrections department mentioned that they do not comment on ongoing legal matters but are currently assessing all requests for religious accommodation related to watching the eclipse.
