Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) is preparing to take on a new position as part of a long-standing Capitol Hill fashion tradition — he’s serving as one of the co-chairs for National Seersucker Day.
The Georgia Democrat will join Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) as co-chair for the June 13 event, according to an announcement from Cassidy’s office on Thursday.
Warnock is stepping into the role previously held by former Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who passed away last year, and was in charge for a decade. died last year at 90.
Cassidy stated in a release that although Feinstein “will be missed this year,” he is looking forward to “continuing this lighthearted tradition” with his new co-chair.
“More than just a fashion statement, National Seersucker Day is a wonderful, bipartisan tradition with Southern origins that helps bring Americans together through our mutual appreciation of elegant and comfortable summer attire,” Warnock remarked.
The day, inspired by the warm weather look, was initiated by then-Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) in 1996. There was a hiatus from wearing seersuckers in 2012 and 2013, before Cassidy and Feinstein revived the clothing and the congressional custom in 2014.
