Ice hockey fans in Boston stood and cheered last Saturday night as two young women proposed marriage to each other while on the ice rink.
The double proposal happened during a sold-out Saturday afternoon match between the Professional Women’s Hockey League of Boston (PWHL Boston) and PWHL Montreal at the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Tsongas Center. During the break, fans were invited to attempt a goal from the center of the rink.
Two young blonde women stepped onto the ice, and — as one of them successfully scored a goal with her back to her partner — the other went down on one knee and took out a small box. The woman who scored the goal celebrated by holding her stick and raising her arms to the cheering audience. Only when she noticed her kneeling partner did she drop her stick and then knelt down as well. There, she took out a ring box.
The crowd started cheering, standing, and applauding as the two women both said yes to each other and then stood up to kiss, hug, and exchange rings. The two women embraced once again as an in-rink official skated over to give the newly engaged couple a bouquet. The couple happily accepted the flowers as the crowd continued to cheer them on.
PWHL Boston shared a video of the dual-proposal on its Instagram page, writing, “THEY BOTH SAID YES [ring emoji] Congratulations Gaby and Nicole on your engagement! [green heart emoji].”
PWHL Boston ended up defeating PWHL Montreal with a score of 4 to 3.
This is just the most recent pro-sports proposal to happen during a game.
In May 2022, a woman proposed to her girlfriend on the basketball court during a game between the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm, two WNBA teams. In December 2016, a basketball fan staged an elaborate marriage proposal to his boyfriend during a game between the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs, two NBA teams — the proposal even involved the Bulls’ mascot and a candy ring.
