President Biden is leading former President Trump by four percentage points among likely voters, according to a new national poll from ABC News/Ipsos.
The survey found that 49 percent of probable voters would back Biden in a head-to-head competition with Trump, who got 45 percent of support. However, Biden and Trump were almost even in a theoretical match among all adults and registered voters.
Trump barely led among all adults surveyed, with 46 percent to 44 percent for Biden. The current president gained support when broken down by registered voters, with 46 percent of compared to 45 percent for Trump.
The poll found that Trump’s hush money case might cause some problems for the former president among his own supporters. While 80 percent of Trump’s supporters said they would still support him if found guilty in the New York case, 16 percent said they would reconsider supporting him and 4 percent said they would no longer do so.
The survey also discovered that more Americans have faith in Trump to manage the economy and inflation than in Biden.
Forty-six percent of those surveyed said they have faith in Trump on the economy, while 32 percent said the same of Biden. Forty-four percent of Americans also said they trusted Trump to handle inflation, compared to the 30 percent for Biden.
The ABC News/Ipsos poll was carried out online among 2,260 adults April 25-30 and has a margin of sampling error of 2 percentage points.
Other national surveys also indicate a close competition between the two top candidates. The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s national polling average of a head-to-head matchup shows both Biden and Trump each receiving about 45 percent support.
