Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are not immune to the appeal of pop star Taylor Swift, particularly when she releases a new album. Washington politicians went on social media on Friday to express their admiration for the star's latest album.
Swift’s latest album, called “The Tortured Poets Department,” was released on Friday, providing fans — including some lawmakers — with new lyrics to memorize and tunes to sing.
“I have votes in the morning. Do I sleep or listen,” Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) posted on the social platform X early Friday morning, seemingly referring to Swift’s new music.
Frost’s post came around the same time Swift revealed the album had a second part at 2 a.m. EDT Friday.
“Congratulations @taylorswift13 on the release of The Tortured Poets Department,” Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) posted on X. “Can’t wait to give it a listen.”
Casey’s post also featured a photo of a handwritten note in which he referenced Swift referring to herself as “The Chairman of the Tortured Poets Department” while promoting the album.
“From one chairman to another, congratulations,” the note reads.
Lawmakers were not the only ones on Capitol Hill captivated by the singer’s new album — federal department heads such as acting Labor Secretary Julie Su were also caught up in the excitement.
Su seemed to make a joke in response to one of Swift’s posts about the release of “The Tortured Poets Department.”
“Is this department unionized?” Su said in a post on X.
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) posted a photo of a friendship bracelet on X similar to those often made and worn by Swift’s fans during the Eras Tour. The bracelet reads, “DIGNITY OF WORK”.
“Hey @taylorswift13, I heard these friendship bracelets never go out of style. Neither does our fight for the Dignity of Work,” Brown said in his Friday post.
The Hill has reached out to Frost’s office.
