Get ready to choose between red and blue pills because there is officially a fifth Matrix movie on the way – but fans aren’t too pleased…
It has been 25 years since Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss made their first appearances as Neo and Trinity in the 1999 classic, also featuring Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving.
They most recently seen in 2021 sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, alongside Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, Christina Ricci and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Warner Brothers bosses have now confirmed that a sequel will be hitting the big screen soon, with filmmakers Lana or Lilly Wachowski not in charge for the first time.
While Lana is serving as executive producer, Drew Goddard has taken over the reins as director, as well as screenwriter and producer.
No further details have been shared regarding the plot, or whether Keanu – who is currently filming for Outcome in LA – and co will be returning to the fold for another futuristic adventure.
'Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,' Jesse Ehrman – the WB president of production – said in a statement via Entertainment Weekly.
'The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.'
'It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,' Drew added. 'Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.'
However, despite the huge success of the franchise, film fans weren’t quite as thrilled at the prospect of another sequel.
Discussing the announcement on Reddit, Alive-Ad-5245 wrote: ‘I’m happy but actually shocked. I was certain that WB were going to park this franchise in the garage for at least a decade after The Matrix Resurrections bombed.’
Stonewalled89 agreed: ‘As the three Matrix sequels have proven, you can’t recapture the lightning in the bottle that was the first Matrix. Unfortunately, as long as there’s money to be made, people will still try.’
KingMario05 pleaded: ‘OH MY GOD JUST LET IT DIE.’
As AngryDuck222 added: 'No, the last one made its point very clear. We don’t need anymore. The original 3 were more than enough.'
Keanu first made his debut as Thomas ‘Neo’ Anderson in the first Matrix film, in 1999, and reprised his role in the subsequent sequels – the Matrix Reloaded in 2003, the Matrix Revolutions later that same year, and 2021 blockbuster, the Matrix Resurrections.
According to reports, he earned more than $156million from his stint as Neo across the franchise, which isn’t too shabby.
Even though he is a very well-known actor and proudly has the nickname 'internet’s husband', the star of Speed prefers to stay away from the public eye as much as he can.
However, Freema Agyeman – who acted in the fourth Matrix movie – shared insight into what it's like to work with Keanu, saying that he is 'very zen'.
She mentioned to Metro.co.uk that she doesn't want to talk too much about Keanu in public, but she did say that he comes across as very calm and she felt starstruck by him.
There were times when he would meditate on set, and even though they wanted to approach him, they knew to give him his space and show respect.
Their interactions on set were good, but the most enjoyable time was when they all went out together one night. The whole cast was there.
She added, '[Keanu] was everything I had imagined. A truly wonderful person.'
Hopefully, they will be able to get together again soon…
Metro.co.uk has reached out to Keanu’s representatives for a statement.
