Nick Pivetta lost narrowly in his first start of the season, allowing one run in six innings with 10 strikeouts in the team’s eventual 1-0 loss in Seattle last Friday.
On Wednesday, the Red Sox will try to provide more offensive support for the experienced player as they seek to finish a series sweep.
Pivetta is scheduled to pitch against Oakland’s Ross Stripling (0-1, 7.20 ERA) in Wednesday’s series finale, which will begin at 3:37 p.m. ET. The Red Sox will use most of their usual starting lineup, with rookie Wilyer Abreu substituting for Tyler O’Neill in right field and Enmanuel Valdez for Pablo Reyes at second base to face the right-handed pitcher.
The Red Sox have won three consecutive games to improve to 4-2 in the early season. Boston currently ranks second in the AL East, trailing the New York Yankees by one game, while the Athletics are 1-5 and tied for last in the AL West.
After today’s game, the Red Sox will travel to Anaheim and have Thursday off before completing their west coast trip with three games against the Los Angeles Angels.
