A man who was hit by a vehicle outside of The Phil’s Tavern on Butler Pike last week has died from injuries sustained in the incident, Wissahickon Now has found out.
Police were sent to the 900 block of Butler Pike in Whitemarsh Township at 8:02 p.m. on March 26 for a report of a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian being hit. Arriving personnel found a red Mercury Montego with a shattered windshield and a man with a bleeding head injury.
Multiple workers from the tavern informed Wissahickon Now they heard noise and yelling outside, then helped the man once they saw him on the street. The man, known as 81-year-old George Boyd, of Plymouth Meeting, was taken from the scene by ambulance to Abington Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian stayed at the scene and is working with the investigation, according to Whitemarsh Township Police Chief Christopher Ward.
“A witness saw the victim go into the road from the western side of Butler Pike crossing to the eastern side of the road,” Ward said. “The victim was seen crossing both the south bound lane and the north bound left turn lane before entering the north bound right curb lane where he was hit by the Mercury sedan.”
Butler Pike was shut down between Skippack Pike and Splitrail Lane because of the crash, reopening about one hour later as crews cleared the scene. Responding units included Whitemarsh Township Police, Whitpain Township Police, Whitemarsh Ambulance, Ambler Ambulance, area fire police, and other agencies.
An investigation involving the Whitemarsh Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office is ongoing, Ward said.
