April Fool’s Day is back and as unamusing as usual, especially as this year is filled with ‘jokes’ that you’ll wish were actually true.
The least funny day of the year is here once again and as usual video game companies can’t resist the urge of April Fool’s Day, and an excuse for strangely elaborate ‘pranks’.
This year in particular there’s hardly any attempt to make them seem believable or amusing, although the Pokémon Sleep one is at least trying. There’s nothing as good as last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog murder mystery game Below are some of the best/worst attempts at tricking gullible gamers, but just remember that none of them are real… except the ones that are. though.
Resident Evil 1 remake
Categorize this one under jokes which might actually become true, if only by accident. Twitter user EvilVR posted an image for a(nother) remake of 1996’s
Resident Evil , which he pretended to have datamined.Although it already had one remake in 2002, many have speculated that it will get another once Capcom runs out of other games in the series to remake, although it’s impossible to guess when that might actually happen. Capcom has said
it’s planning on more remakes in the future , though, sometime next year isn’t outside the realm of possibility.Pokémon Sleep world championships
Another example that we would gladly welcome in the real world, a competitive tournament for the sleep-tracking app
Sleep. Just as long as they don’t use the phrase ‘gaping-mouth sleep’ ever again. Pokémon Dave The Diver and Palworld dating sims
Giving your game a dating sim twist is a common April Fool’s Day format, and this year we’ve been treated to two, for
and Dave The Diver. The latter is especially unsettling as it takes place in VR, which is somehow creepier than dating an animal in a mini-skirt. Palworld Dying Light 2 does Pokémon
Capture the zombie hordes with a Pokémon grenade in this new (sadly not real) update to Dying Light 2. Although maybe if it’s popular they will do an update for real.
Cyberpunk 2077 goes floppy
Instead of turning towards the future, CD Projekt has blasted back to the past with the fake promise of a floppy disc version of Cyberpunk 2077 spanning 97,619 ‘diskettes’.
Take on a giant in Dead By Daylight
In an actually playable 48-hour event, My Little Oni sees the survivors in Dead By Daylight try and survive a giant Japanese demon. There’s nothing overtly funny about it, and since it’s a real thing doesn’t count as a prank, so it’s hard to see what the connection to April Fool’s Day is even supposed to be.
Feel like dirt with Yacht Club Games
The creators of Shovel Knight have revealed their second biggest passion, beyond video games: a new skincare range titled ‘D by Yacht’. And no, the ‘D’ stands for dirt.
Minecraft’s overhauled poisonous potatoes
Minecraft’s most useless item takes the spotlight in a new (again, sadly not real) update, where you can travel to the poisonous potato dimension with potato shoes and potato armour.
Spread the D with PowerWash Simulator
If you’re tired of cleaning in PowerWash Simulator, a new video advertises complete chaos by spraying dirt all over different properties in PowerDirt Simulator.
Virtual Boy is revived for Nintendo Switch
Speculating about Nintendo hardware is always a popular topic for April Fool’s Day, and IGN envisions a modern version of the Virtual Boy attached to a Nintendo Switch. Highlights include a landlord's ramblings being subdued by an unusually reasonable Tom Nook.
April Fool’s Day is here again and it's as unfunny as ever, especially as this year is filled with ‘jokes’ that you’ll wish were actually true.
