Getafe boss Pepe Bordalas acknowledges they are still unsure about Manchester United’s plans regarding Mason Greenwood, as the forward’s future remains uncertain.
The 22-year-old is currently on loan at the Spanish club for the season after an internal investigation by the Red Devils concluded that the England international should continue his career elsewhere following his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.
Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into the first team before the club faced criticism from supporters over his potential return.
There is a possibility that the club’s position has changed now, however, with new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe leaving the door open for Greenwood’s return.
It does not seem that a decision has been made yet and Getafe have not been informed if Manchester United have come to a conclusion.
Bordalas is very complimentary about the Englishman’s contribution, but has to wait and see if there is a chance to keep him for the next season.
‘We don’t know,’ he said. ‘Ultimately his club has to decide, the intentions they have with the footballer.
‘From there we will also understand the player’s intentions for his future. But I can’t tell you. We are happy with his behavior, his performance and well, now we only think about the next game, which is the game against Sevilla.’
Speaking in February, shortly after his partial takeover of the club, Ratcliffe said of Greenwood: ‘We will make a decision, correct.
‘All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if he is a good person or not?
‘He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football.
‘So the answer is, ‘yeah, we have to make decisions’. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made. He’s on-loan obviously, but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.
‘The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not?
‘Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?’
In a separate interview with the BBC, Ratcliffe added on Greenwood’s situation: ‘We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.
‘Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.’
