Shortly before the game on Friday night, the Red Sox announced that Rafael Devers would not play because his left shoulder was sore.
Devers performed well on Opening Night, getting two hits in five at-bats, including a double, home run, two runs batted in and one strikeout.
This is a significant loss for Seattle, as Devers has been very successful against the Mariners since the beginning of his career. He started playing in the Major League at T-Mobile Park in July 2017 and hit his first home run in the following game. Since June 2018, he has been able to get on base in each of his last 15 games in Seattle. As of Thursday night, he has a batting average of .336 with a 1.014 OPS and has hit 10 home runs in 37 games against the Mariners.
Bobby Dalbec will take Devers' place. He was considered a top prospect but only played in 21 big-league games last season, with one start and one complete game at third base.
