An insider claims that after Toys For Bob hinted at a new Spyro game, the studio has been working on the project since January.
Following the success of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, it appears that Toys For Bob is working on a new Spyro adventure.
The independent studio was recently reported to have agreed to work with Microsoft on its next game – something the studio hinted at in the original announcement of its split from Activision.
Although the studio’s next project has not been officially confirmed, Microsoft owns Activision, which owns the Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, and Skylanders IP – properties all developed in recent years by Toys For Bob.
The report about the alleged Microsoft deal suggested that the studio’s next project would be ‘similar to games Toys For Bob has made in the past’ – indicating a possible return to one of these franchises.
There is now more evidence to suggest this, with a video posted by Canadian Guy Eh – who regularly covers Crash Bandicoot and Spyro news – claiming that Toys For Bob is working on a new Spyro game.
‘Spyro 4 is in development,’ the insider claimed. ‘That’s a statement. No theory crafting, no evidence-based assumptions, no conspiracies or even a heavy-handed hint.’
The YouTuber claims he was informed about the project by ‘numerous, serious’ sources at the gaming convention PAX East, who also apparently revealed the same details of the reported deal between Microsoft and Toys For Bob before they were published.
According to his sources, Spyro 4 has been in development since January this year. Therefore, if this is true, we probably won’t hear anything about the project for a few years yet.
While it’s wise to wait for an official announcement before getting too excited, Toys For Bob has not been subtle in hinting about a potential Spyro game.
In January, when the studio announced its independence, the post concluded with what seemed like a Spyro tease, stating: ‘So, keep your horns on and your eyes out for more news.’
Considering the studio's trajectory before they were required to work on Call Of Duty, Spyro 4 also makes sense. In 2020, Toys For Bob released Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, an original Crash Bandicoot game which followed the studio’s success in remaking the first three titles in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. A new Spyro game would therefore continue the studio’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy from 2018.
Crash Bandicoot 4 was presented as a direct sequel to the original trilogy (ignoring all the other mostly unsatisfactory sequels), so it’s likely that any potential Spyro 4 will do the same.
