The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has chosen not to challenge the rulings clearing former leaders of the now extinct People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) of various accusations, such as provoking public unrest, unlawful gathering, wrongful detention and coercion, in front of the Supreme Court.
The situations go back to 2008, when the political pressure group, led by Sondhi Limthongkul, Somsak Kosaisuk, Phiphop Thongchai and Suriyasai Katasila, organized street protests against the government of then Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.
The Criminal Court found all of them not guilty of the charges, decisions which were upheld by the Appeals Court. According to Section 220 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the case cannot be appealed to the Supreme Court unless the OAG deems it necessary for finalisation.
OAG spokesman Prayut Bejraguna said yesterday that the OAG concurs with the acquittals by the two lower courts and has decided not to appeal.
