The Justice Minister, Tawee Sodsong, has stressed that Thaksin Shinawatra has not breached the terms of his release by participating in political events, as these activities are not forbidden.
Thaksin plans to visit the Pheu Thai party this afternoon, apparently to allow party members to meet him and convey their well wishes, instead of visiting him at his private residence.
Tawee stated that Thaksin is still on parole, must regularly report to the Probation Department officials, and must comply with the terms of his parole, including not being involved with drugs and not visiting other parolees.
According to the justice minister, meeting with Pheu Thai MPs this afternoon is not against the rules. He defended the Corrections Department, stating that the department has no authority to restrict Thaksin’s activities, except for those explicitly prohibited.
He also mentioned that the Justice Ministry does not have the power to interfere in the private matters of parolees beyond its specific duties and responsibilities.
Numerous Pheu Thai MPs are expected to come and greet Thaksin, as he has not visited the party for around 17 years.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit expressed his intention to meet Thaksin today, reminiscing about the time when he served as the secretary-general of the now defunct Thai Rak Thai party while Thaksin was its leader.
He also mentioned that if given the opportunity, he would seek guidance from the former prime minister on how to restore Suvarnabhumi international airport's former status as one of the world's top airports.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will be occupied with other activities this afternoon.
