Ohio Senate Candidate Bernie Moreno (R) stated in an interview on Sunday that he believes former President Trump will gain the most support from Hispanic voters in the upcoming presidential election in November.
In an interview on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Maria Bartiromo asked Moreno about a recent New York Times/Siena College poll that indicated Trump’s backing from Hispanic American voters exceeded President Biden's, with 46 percent supporting Trump and 40 percent supporting Biden. Biden garnered more Latino voters in the 2020 general election.
“Well, I think that poll is exactly right. I think President Trump will win the Hispanic vote,” said Moreno, who won the Ohio Senate GOP primary race last week after securing Trump’s endorsement.
Moreno, who immigrated as a child from South America, said he believes Hispanic voters mainly have more faith in Trump to handle immigration, which Moreno expressed would be evident in the poll in November.
“As you know, I came here – from Colombia, South America, where I was born – legally. To watch Biden and Brown reward people who break our laws that come into this country is infuriating. On top of that, the crime and chaos caused by illegal immigration affects predominantly Hispanic communities,” Moreno said, without citing any specific evidence.
Moreno continued to criticize Biden, alleging that his policies have negatively impacted the situation on the southern border.
“And they’re sick and tired of being abused and watching Biden cause the largest deaths of Hispanics,” Moreno continued. “The reality is, you have migrants that are crossing into Mexico into the U.S. that are being raped and killed. And all that is a result of Biden’s policies. Hispanics see it for what it is.”
The Biden campaign has attempted to alter the public discourse on immigration policy. Biden and Democrats have pointed to Trump’s role in derailing a bipartisan Biden-supported border bill, which would have implemented “the toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades,” Biden said at the time.
The Biden campaign recently launched Latinos con Biden-Harris, a national program to involve and rally Latino voters before the 2020 election.
“The Latino vote was crucial to the President’s victory in 2020, and 2024 will be no different,” campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez said in a statement announcing the effort. “Latinos con Biden-Harris will be essential to activating and mobilizing Latinos across the country, and importantly, is another way we are making clear with action that we are investing aggressively into earning the Latino vote.”
