Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister who has been convicted, will go to the Pheu Thai party on Tuesday. This will give the party’s MPs the chance to meet with him, but he will not attend a party meeting.
A source from the party said today that it will be easier for the MPs to meet him at the party's office rather than at Thaksin’s private residence in Bangkok. It will also allow the MPs to offer him their moral support while keeping his and his family’s privacy.
The source mentioned that the MPs will not all see him at the same time, but plans have been made for them to meet with him one by one.
The source also mentioned that Thaksin’s visit to the party head office is generating excitement among the MPs and most, if not all, MPs will be there on Tuesday for this “special occasion”.
Last week, Thaksin, who is on parole, spent three days in his hometown of Chiang Mai. He said it was to show respect for his deceased parents, visit some local projects, and meet with his old classmates after about 17 years of absence during his exile abroad.
Observers in politics said that his visit to Chiang Mai was actually an effort to regain the popularity of the Pheu Thai party in its former stronghold, after it suffered a huge defeat to the Move Forward party in last May’s general election.
