WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. fighter jets from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier hit three underground storage facilities in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen on Friday night, as reported by a U.S. official speaking anonymously about the military operation not yet made public. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is currently located in the Red Sea.
Witnesses and videos from Sanaa on Friday night revealed strikes and explosions, with some footage spreading on social media. The videos depicted explosions and smoke rising over the Houthi-controlled capital.
There has been no official confirmation of injuries or the source of the explosions. Yemeni TV station Al-Masirah, associated with the Houthis, stated that the city was hit by the strikes.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are aligned with Iran and hold control over large parts of the north and west of the country, have been carrying out a series of drone and missile attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. The rebels characterize this as a move to pressure Israel to cease its conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Despite two months of U.S.-led airstrikes, the Houthis have continued their attacks.
