Gov. Maura Healey has chosen Jordan Maynard as the temporary leader of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, promoting the ex-Baker assistant to head the board while they look for a new permanent chair.
Maynard's appointment follows Chair Cathy Judd-Stein's retirement announcement.
Maynard became a Commissioner in 2022, with former Gov. Charlie Baker, then-Attorney General Healey, and Treasurer Deb Goldberg's approval.
Healey expressed gratitude for Maynard's service and stated that they are continuing the search for a permanent chair while he takes over as Interim Chair.
Maynard previously held the positions of Chief Secretary and Director of Boards and Commissions for the Office of the Governor under Governor Baker from February 2019 to July 2022.
Mortgage rates climb again
The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate increased to nearly 7% this week, raising borrowing costs for home buyers as the spring homebuying season gets underway.
Freddie Mac, a mortgage buyer, reported that the average rate on a 30-year mortgage rose to 6.87% from 6.74% last week and was 6.42% a year ago.
The average rate on 15-year fixed-rate mortgages, popular for home loan refinancing, also went up this week, reaching an average rate of 6.21% from 6.16% last week and 5.68% a year ago, according to Freddie Mac.
“After decreasing for a couple of weeks, mortgage rates are once again on the upswing,” noted Sam Khater, the chief economist at Freddie Mac.
