A recent survey discovered that most Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) adults in the United States strongly support the idea of legal abortion.
The poll A survey by AAPI Data and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that almost 8 out of 10 AAPI adults believe that abortion should be legal in most cases, and three quarters believe that Congress should pass a law to ensure access to legal abortions.
This survey is particularly relevant amidst the ongoing battle over abortion rights, with 14 states having already made abortion illegal following the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
According to the survey, nearly 6 out of 10 AAPI adults do not want Congress to pass a law allowing states to set their own abortion laws, and only 14 percent support a nationwide abortion ban.
The survey also revealed that AAPI adults' support for abortion is higher than that of the general U.S. adult population. A previous AP-NORC poll showed that 64 percent of U.S. adults believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with only 6 in 10 supporting a law guaranteeing access. AP-NORC's previous surveyrevealed that 64 percent of U.S. adults believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases, with 6 in 10 supporting a law guaranteeing access.
The survey also found that 55 percent of AAPI adults trust Democrats on abortion policy, in contrast to just 12 percent who trust Republicans.
Most of the state restrictions and bans have been implemented in Republican-led legislatures, despite AAPI adults being more likely to support abortion even across different political parties.
Even among party lines, AAPI adults are more likely to support abortion, with over half of AAPI Democrats supporting legal abortion without any limits compared to 40 percent of Democrats overall.
More than half of AAPI Republicans believe abortion should be legal in some cases, as opposed to only 38 percent of Republicans in general.
Fifty-one percent of AAPI Republicans believe Congress should pass a law guaranteeing access to legal abortion nationwide, compared to just 32 percent of Republicans overall.
AP-NORC conducted the survey of 1,172 U.S. AAPI adults from Feb. 5-14, 2024, with a margin of sampling error of 3.9 percentage points.
