Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) commended the Supreme Court for permitting a Texas law to be enforced on Tuesday. The law enables state law enforcement to apprehend individuals they suspect of illegally entering the United States through the southern border.
The Supreme Court authorized the contentious law, S.B. 4, in a Tuesday order that Collins described as a “great victory” for the country. The legislation, signed into effect by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) last year, grants any Texas law enforcement officer the authority to arrest those suspected of entering the country unlawfully, who may subsequently face deportation or imprisonment. endorsed into law by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) last year, empowers any Texas law enforcement officer to arrest those suspected of entering the country unlawfully, who may later face deportation or incarceration.
“We've been saying for months that every state is a border state now, and Texas rightfully had a significant victory today,” Collins said on “The Hill” on NewsNation. “And it was also a significant victory for America.”
“And it shows that when the Biden administration doesn't secure that border down there, states can at least take action and attempt to reduce the flow of these illegal migrants crossing that border, and send them back home,” he added.
The order is not a final decision, and the case could later return to the Supreme Court.
Collins also suggested that it would be a “great idea” for the Georgia legislature to pass a law similar to that of Texas.
“There's fentanyl out there that are causing the deaths of Americans. There's human trafficking taking place all over this country. We are dealing with all forms of criminal activity stemming from these illegal migrants entering our country, and we are striving to exhaust every possible means to put a stop to this,” he added.
Texas and the Biden administration have been in disagreement for months over immigration policies, with Texas arguing that it has the right to defend itself against migrants entering the country illegally via its border with Mexico. The Biden administration has countered this argument and urged the Supreme Court to block the law.
“We fundamentally disagree with the Supreme Court’s order allowing Texas’ harmful and unconstitutional law to go into effect,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. “S.B. 4 will not only make communities in Texas less safe, it will also burden law enforcement, and sow chaos and confusion at our southern border.”
