Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino made journalists laugh during Friday’s press conference when questioned about the club’s substantial financial losses.
It was recently announced that Chelsea had a pre-tax loss of £90.1m, putting the west Londoners in financial trouble.
It is believed that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly – who has spent over £1 billion on players since taking over from Roman Abramovich in May 2022 – recently traveled to Saudi Arabia to seek funds for the club.
The American is looking for a new shirt sponsor for the Blues and is planning to sell some players to the Saudi Pro League during the summer transfer window.
‘Last week, I asked you about the financial results, you said you were going to speak to the club about it,’ The Athletic’s Simon Johnson asked Chelsea boss Pochettino on Friday.
‘I didn’t speak!’ Pochettino abruptly said before the journalist could finish, causing the room to burst into laughter as the reporter joked about asking a different question.
‘No, it’s true. I didn’t speak [to them]. We didn’t have time. That is why. We’ll see in the next few days or weeks. The club will inform you better than me.
‘We talk about many things but we did not talk about that problem.’
Meanwhile, Pochettino has also given an injury update on Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell after he was named in the England squad on Thursday.
‘Gareth [Southgate] told you he’s fit!’ Pochettino added. ‘Back to training. I think everything is going well. He will be in the squad for Sunday [against Leicester].’
