A recent age rating listing hinted at the Silent Hill 2 remake being closer than anticipated, and now a retailer has specified an actual date.
So far, Konami’s attempt to revive the Silent Hill series has not been successful. The recent free game The Short Message received average feedback, while the live service game Ascension was poorly received to the point that people believed it had been written by AI.
Despite concerns about developer Bloober Team's capability, there is still considerable interest in the Silent Hill 2 remake, although little has been revealed about it so far, despite its planned release later this year.
Last week, the game appeared on the South Korean age rating website, which usually indicates an upcoming release, and now a Mexican retailer has listed it for May 30.
The listing might be a placeholder, but usually placeholders are set for the last day of the month or a day that the game clearly will not be released, such as a Sunday. May 30, however, falls on a Thursday, which could likely be the actual release date.
That date seems to have been removed now, but it’s hard to say whether that makes it more or less likely that it was correct.
While retailers can make mistakes, or list items earlier than they should to encourage pre-orders, the age rating listing alone is concrete evidence that the game is imminent.
The remake may be the highest profile Silent Hill game at the moment but it’s not the only one in development. There is also Townfall by British developer No Code that has been announced, along with the promising Silent Hill ƒ.
There are rumors of more games beyond that, but it likely depends on Konami achieving major success with one of the initial games. This is far from guaranteed, considering that Silent Hill has historically been a niche favorite, and even the highly praised Silent Hill 2 only sold about 1 million copies when it was originally released on PlayStation 2.
This makes it difficult to predict how well the remake will do, but it seems unlikely to be as big as the Resident Evil remakes.
