A recent update to the game's backend indicates that developer id Software is considering adding official mod support for Doom Eternal, in anticipation of the game's anniversary.
Four years after Doom Eternal was first released, it appears that developer id Software could be preparing a significant update.
The next installment of the 2016’s Doom reboot remains one of the top shooters of recent years, and has been enhanced by two very challenging DLCs called The Ancient Gods: Part One and Part Two, since its release in March 2020.
However, it seems that official mod support may finally be introduced to the game after all these years. Doom Eternal currently has a modding community, but it has never been officially incorporated by developer id Software.
According to SteamDB page, a number of changes were made on Tuesday, March 12, including a reference to 'DoomModPortal.exe'. Additionally, there is a change which mentions the ability to 'Launch mod portal'.
Although there has been no official announcement, it is likely that this is a feature intended to facilitate the creation and sharing of community projects within Doom Eternal.
Interestingly, the game's fourth anniversary is approaching on March 20, which could be the perfect time for an unexpected announcement.
In 2019, prior to the game's release, Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton mentioned the intention to eventually include mod support.
‘We’ve actually done things technically that are getting us closer to doing mod support, but it won’t be immediate,’ Stratton told Game Informer. ‘I think longer term. We made technical decisions years ago that we’re still moving away from, and they’re getting us closer to those kinds of things.’
Given that it's almost been four years since Doom Eternal's release, the bigger question might be when we can expect a sequel. A game called Doom Year Zero was leaked in Microsoft documents last year, but there has been no official announcement or rumors.
However, it is highly likely that id Software is working on a new installment, as Doom Eternal was both a financial and critical success in 2020, receiving five nominations at The Game Awards.
