The Patriots are trading quarterback Mac Jones to the Jaguars for a late-round pick, according to reports.
The team had been receiving inquiries about Jones recently, as per the NFL Network, and had been looking into trading Jones in the past few weeks, according to ESPN.
The 25-year-old is leaving New England after experiencing two difficult seasons which ended with him not playing for the final six games last year. He completed 64.9% of his passes for 10 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 2,120 yards, while the team went 2-9 in his starts. Jones was also benched four times before being replaced by backup Bailey Zappe.
In Jacksonville, he will serve as the backup for fellow 2021 first-round pick Trevor Lawrence.
Jones joined the league as the Patriots’ expected future leader in 2021, after being selected with the 15th overall pick in that year’s draft. He then had one of the best first seasons by a quarterback in NFL history. Jones eventually lost favor with the coaching staff amid changes in offensive coordinators and quarterbacks coaches, while the team gave him some of the worst skill-position talent in the league.
