Two law enforcement officers and the leader of a local administrative unit narrowly avoided getting hurt when two makeshift explosive devices, thought to be homemade bombs, were thrown into a coffee shop at a gas station in Thung Yang Daeng district of Thailand’s southernmost province of Pattani on Sunday.
Local police believe that insurgents from the south are behind the assault, with the intent to harm the two officers, Pol Lt-Col Veerawat Darongkoon, the suppression inspector, and Sobri Pohsu, mayor of the Nam Dam TAO.
Law enforcement in Thung Yan Daeng report that one of the rebels entered the coffee shop from the rear entrance and tossed the two homemade bombs inside. One of them went off without causing any injuries. The intended targets fled in different directions.
The second device did not explode, leading police to believe that it was set to detonate later, when more officers would arrive to investigate the initial explosion.
