The NFL Network reported that other teams have called the Patriots to discuss trading Mac Jones, the team's quarterback.
It’s believed that both the Patriots and Jones would benefit from starting fresh after two disappointing seasons.
According to sources within the league, it's expected that Jones could be traded for a fifth-round pick, although another executive believes the Patriots might only get a sixth-rounder in return.
Jones, who was a first-round pick in 2021, was benched for the final six games of the last season after struggling with turnovers and pressure, exacerbated by poor protection and receiver performance. He completed 64.9% of his passes for 2,120 yards, with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, before being replaced by backup Bailey Zappe.
Jones initially had a strong start as a Pro Bowl alternate, but has since faced coaching changes and a weak roster in New England. Potential trade partners are expected to try and bring back the successful version of Jones, who had an impressive rookie season with 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions during a playoff run.
The 25-year-old has faced criticism for his on-field outbursts and inconsistent leadership both inside and outside the Patriots organization. By midseason last year, it was reported that Jones had lost the support of the team.
Jones is entering the final year of his contract, and if the Patriots or his next team choose to do so, they can pick up a fifth-year option by May 2, guaranteeing Jones a salary of $25.56 million in 2025.
