The former London residence of Freddie Mercury, a member of the legendary rock band Queen, is now for sale at a price of 30 million pounds (equivalent to approximately 41.1 million USD).
On the 27th (local time), The Times and Sky News reported that Garden Lodge, a two-story house in the Kensington area of West London where Freddie Mercury lived until his final days, has been listed for sale.
Garden Lodge, built in 1907, boasted lovely wooden furniture, yellow wallpaper, and a modest garden, earning it the nickname “country house in the heart of London.”
Mercury acquired this residence in 1980 and resided there until his passing due to AIDS-related complications in 1991. Following his demise, his former partner and friend, Mary Austin, moved into the house and lived there with her family. Once her children grew up and moved out, she lived there alone.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Austin revealed the rationale for selling the house, stating, “The property is under my name, but it’s always been Freddie’s. It was his dream and vision,” and added, “I think it’s time for me to move on to a new chapter in my life.”
In the meantime, Austin auctioned off around 1,500 items from the house at Sotheby’s in London last September, raising over 39 million pounds. Particularly, the green garden gate, adorned with fan tribute messages, fetched 412,000 pounds.
A portion of the proceeds has reportedly been donated to AIDS-related organizations established by surviving members of Queen.
