The wreckage of a ship that once carried furs and other goods across the Great Lakes has been discovered at the bottom of Lake Ontario.
A team of three retirees whose hobby is sniffing out shipwrecks used sonar to identify the remains of the Washington in June. An ROV later took high-resolution pictures of the ship, which sank during a storm in 1803.
The Washington is the second oldest shipwreck—and oldest intact commercial vessel—found in the Great Lakes. Archaeologists hope that its remains will yield some rare clues about life in this region before the War of 1812.
