TikTok will begin marking content created by artificial intelligence from other platforms in an effort to combat misinformation. the company announced on Thursday.
TikTok is teaming up with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), a group that provides tools to identify AI-generated content.
TikTok stated that it will employ C2PA’s “Content Credentials” technology to add metadata to content, indicating to users that it is AI-generated. This feature is now available for images and videos, with plans to include audio-only content in the future, according to TikTok.
This move is part of a wider industry trend to increase transparency around the use of AI on platforms. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced in February its intention to label more AI-generated content and remove content that violates its policies.
The increased labeling of AI-generated content was outlined in President Biden’s executive order signed last October, which aimed to address the risks associated with emerging technology while ensuring safety, privacy, and innovation.
TikTok already labels content produced using in-app tools.
In addition to watermarking content, TikTok revealed plans to release 12 videos that will focus on media literacy skills. TikTok will collaborate with MediaWise, the Poynter Institute’s program dedicated to addressing misinformation.
“Our Teen Fact-Checking Network has built an audience with innovative media literacy videos on TikTok since 2019. Five years later, we’re thrilled to empower even more people to separate fact from fiction online,” said MediaWise’s Director Alex Mahadevan stated.
