Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed on Thursday that she felt like she would “throw up” during the recent oral arguments in the Supreme Court regarding emergency access abortion.
“While listening to the oral argument before the Supreme Court about whether doctors, hospitals, and nurses must provide emergency care to pregnant women who arrive in emergency rooms, bleeding and in terrible pain, facing a significant challenge to a pregnancy they wanted but are now not only ill but possibly dying, I thought I would literally throw up,
The Supreme Court last month seemed doubtful about whether a federal law guarantees access to lifesaving care, including abortion care when needed. The justices were divided by both their beliefs and gender.
Clinton shared, “To hear male justices of the Supreme Court debating how many organs you have to lose to qualify for emergency treatment, honestly, it was ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ becoming a reality. It was distressing to me that this kind of conversation was taking place in the Supreme Court by a radical group of justices who want to turn back the clock on numerous advancements we’ve made.
The Supreme Court case is examining an Idaho law that bars abortion care in all circumstances except when a woman’s life is at risk.
The Biden administration filed a lawsuit against the state challenging the law, arguing that it contradicts the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act, which requires federally funded hospitals to offer stabilizing care to emergency room patients irrespective of their ability to pay.
Clinton reaffirmed her backing for President Biden’s reelection, asserting that it is crucial for safeguarding abortion rights in the U.S.
“Hence, any woman who possesses self-respect, autonomy, agency, independence, and values freedom should recognize that there is only one choice in this election, and that’s Joe Biden,” she remarked.
“This is something I feel strongly about because if you have religious beliefs regarding abortion, then follow your own religious beliefs. This is exactly what this country permits and actually encourages you to do. However, that doesn’t grant you or any of your male supporters the right to impose your beliefs on everyone else, on every woman in this country,” Clinton added.
She encouraged female voters to make a decision that will “preserve” their freedom, emphasizing that “progress is possible, but not guaranteed.
Clinton has been a vocal advocate for abortion care access and last month cautioned that the oral arguments indicated that access might be restricted.
“The MAGA Supreme Court majority seems prepared to decide that the right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ does not apply to women with pregnancy complications or who require abortions,” Clinton stated on the social platform X. “This is horrifying, and it is because of Donald Trump.”
