Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb slammed Judge Aileen Cannon for delaying the Mar-a-Lago documents case involving former President Trump without setting a new trial date.
Cobb told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Tuesday that all Cannon did was officially confirm that she did not intend to bring the case to trial, which was already known by many, including Jack Smith.
Cannon’s order on Tuesday., which came out less than two weeks before the scheduled start date of May 20, pushes back some court dates for the case to late July and does not establish a new trial start date.
She explained that the delay was necessary to address various issues, particularly the handling of classified information during the trial, which is governed by the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA).
Cannon mentioned that she still needs to rule on “eight substantive pretrial motions,” but Cobb argues that she has had months to resolve these motions.
Cobb stated, “So, you know, this is something that I think it was always her objective, frankly, to prevent this from going to trial.” highlighted by Mediaite. “But also, I think, you know, her … inability, wholesale inability, to do it was made palpable.”
Cobb claimed that Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, justified her decision to postpone the trial as a “combination of bias and incompetence.” He criticized her choices, such as scheduling a hearing regarding the Justice Department’s trial team, as “completely unexplainable” and “tragic.”
“Throughout this case, she has not prioritized the public interest even for a single day, as she has remained stalled in her office, seemingly unable to make decisions on easily solvable motions. Sadly, this case will not go to trial, despite being one of the most crucial cases in history and could have been resolved before the election,” Cobb expressed.
