During the first three months of this year, the Government Savings Bank (GSB) resolved the non-performing loans (NPLs) of over 720,000 customers, including about 90,000 who were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, as stated by Vitai Ratanakorn, president and CEO of the bank, today.
He mentioned that, by the end of the year, another 100,000 NPLs will have been resolved, provided that the government allocates additional funding. He also stated that this one-time action is aimed at restoring the financial credibility of debtors, in accordance with the government’s policy.
Meanwhile, Prasit Veerasilp, acting president of the SME Development Bank, announced that the bank will organize an event to assist in resolving the debts of SMEs across the country, starting on May 13th and 14th in Phetchaburi province.
SMEs in debt who take part in the event will receive a reduction in the interest charged on overdue payments, with the rate not exceeding the 7.50% MLR, a decrease in the amount of each payment to a level that debtors can afford, and a cut in the interest charged on late payments, as stated by Prasit.
If the debtors pay off the full debt amount, the bank will waive all the overdue interest charges, in order to alleviate the burden on the SMEs and help them restart their businesses, he added.
Similar events are planned from May to August, with the aim of assisting over 10,000 SMEs.
