Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey praised the platform he created, now called X, as “freedom technology” on Saturday, shortly after announcing he was no longer a board member for Bluesky.
Dorsey verified that he had departed from Bluesky — a decentralized microblogging site formed through an effort he began while at Twitter in 2019 — in a Saturday morning message on X.
“Don’t rely on companies to grant you rights,” he stated in another message several hours later. “Protect them yourself using freedom technology. (you’re on one).”
Bluesky recognized Dorsey’s resignation from the board in a post on its site Sunday.
“We genuinely thank Jack for his assistance in funding and launching the Bluesky project,” it stated. “Today, Bluesky is thriving as an open source social network operating on atproto, the decentralized protocol we have built.”
“With Jack’s departure, we are seeking a new board member for the Bluesky public benefit company who shares our dedication to constructing a social network that empowers people to control their experience. More details to follow!” the company added.
In the aftermath of Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, Bluesky was one of several platforms considered a possible alternative to the platform, as some users expressed concerns about Musk’s intentions for Twitter.
Bluesky was introduced as an invite-only app for iOS and Android users in February and April 2023, respectively. This February, the platform became available to all users.
