Daryl Morey, the basketball operations chief, explained that the Sixers will undergo significant change this offseason, with over $65 million in salary cap space, the ability to trade draft picks, and two stars in Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, making the team an attractive destination.
The Sixers have the option to trade draft picks and have two stars on the roster, making them a preferred destination with over $65 million in salary cap space.
Morey's approach to win with star power complemented by fringe players will remain unchanged.
Morey expressed that the Sixers are in a better position compared to last season because they have identified Maxey as a star complement to Embiid. The challenge now is to add another star and build a team around them, focusing on quality over quantity.
Morey emphasized the importance of having top players and the need for change this offseason, citing examples of teams like the Lakers, Toronto, and the Milwaukee Bucks who made significant changes before winning a title.
In summary, there is no set formula for success, but the key is to have really good players who can outperform other teams.
Morey answered questions for 30 minutes at the Sixers training facility in Camden, occasionally fiddling with a water bottle like a prop.
Despite a disappointing playoff exit, Morey is optimistic about moving the Sixers forward after losing to the Knicks in six games.
Morey is looking for a legitimate wingman for Embiid and Maxey as a top priority.
Morey expressed the need for a wing player who can perform at a high level in the playoffs, indicating a strong desire to fill that position.
There are signs that free agent Tobias Harris may not be retained, although Morey mentioned interest in keeping all free agents.
Paul George is a potential candidate, and there are rumors of interest from the Sixers and Orlando, with the Sixers being closer to a title than the Magic.
The drawing power of Embiid and Maxey could help attract players like Paul George, LeBron James, and Jimmy Butler.
According to Morey, age is not a significant factor in winning a championship. George is almost 34, Butler will be 35 next season, and James is 40.
Morey emphasized the tools available this offseason, such as draft picks and cap space, expressing the desire to bring in star players who can fit with Joel and Tyrese.
Morey stated that the Sixers are essentially committed to only Embiid, Maxey, who is a restricted free agent, Paul Reed and Ricky Council IV.
“We’re mostly going to be a team with a lot of experienced players,” Morey said. “There’s going to be a great deal of transformation. Besides Nick Nurse, Joel and Tyrese, and Paul and Ricky, we aren’t certain of who will return next year. We will maintain consistency with our top players and our head coach but there will be a lot of changes during this offseason. We believe we’re in a phase where we need to win immediately. Our main focus is to acquire the best players that complement Joel and Tyrese.”
Regarding Embiid’s health, ongoing discussions are being held on how to improve the big guy’s fitness. Embiid frequently gets injured towards the end of seasons when his team needs him the most.
Embiid’s decision on whether or not he will play in the Paris Olympics for Team USA, according to Morey. By then, the Sixers should have improved after the free agency and the draft.
“Certainly, we did not achieve our objectives this year,” Morey said. “However, there is a lot of enthusiasm here. Everyone is fully engaged and eager to approach this offseason. Of course, we have two exceptional players to construct around in Joel and Tyrese. Tyrese made significant progress this year. We believe he has tremendous potential. Joel was exceptional for us, a true fighter to the end. So, we are excited about the individuals that we are building around.
“This offseason is crucial. I am obligated to the fans, to the ownership, to everyone to position this team in a position where we are contending for championships, and we clearly did not accomplish that this year.”
