The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has instructed to halt the construction of electrical ducts at the entrance of Lat Phrao Soi 49 until the Metropolitan Electricity Administration (MEA) properly covers the manholes along the central reservation.
A man accidentally fell to his death in a 15-meter-deep electrical duct, through a manhole, when he stepped on the inadequate plywood covering of the hole.
BMA Spokesman Ekwaranyu Umrapal stated that many electrical duct access manholes on the central reservation, from Lat Phrao to Samrong, are not adequately covered after the original iron covers were stolen. He added that the issue must be resolved within three days.
If the problem is not addressed within the deadline, he cautioned that the BMA may not authorize the MEA to conduct similar construction work in the city in the future.
To temporarily address the problem, the MEA has placed concrete lids on the manholes, while urging the contractor to expedite their work.
The MEA has also requested assistance from metropolitan police in identifying those who stole the iron manhole covers, likely to sell to scrap metal dealers, while warning that the perpetrators will face severe consequences in accordance with the law.
