A defence volunteer was killed and five others were hurt in a shooting, then an explosion, in Bannang Sata district of Thailand’s southern province of Yala today.
As per police reports, Mada-oh Waeyeegao, a defence volunteer, was shot by the passenger on a motorcycle while he was riding another motorcycle home after attending a prayer at a masjid in his village in Bacho sub-district. He passed away at the location.
Shortly after, five volunteers in a pickup truck hurried to the location to help their colleague, only to become victims of an explosion, set off by insurgents hiding behind bushes in the area.
All five volunteers were injured and their vehicle was damaged in the explosion. Additional troops then arrived at the location to transport the injured to the district hospital.
The area was blocked off after another suspicious device was discovered tied to a utility pole.
