More than one third of U.S. workers are worried that AI might cause them to work fewer hours, receive lower pay, or even lose their jobs completely. Two recent studies discovered this.
According to polls by YouGov, 36% of employees, both full-time and part-time, fear that AI will take over their jobs.
Among those who use AI tools at work, 20% are very worried about how it will impact their careers, and 25% are somewhat concerned, as per the surveys.
Furthermore, more workers now believe that AI will diminish job opportunities in their fields compared to a year ago. In a survey from June 2023, 33% of participants thought AI would reduce job availability in their sector. In the more recent survey, this figure rose to 43%.
Despite these worries, more employees have expressed the belief over the past year that AI will create more job opportunities in their fields.
The majority of people believe that AI will positively impact their daily work tasks. 56% of respondents think AI will increase the automation of routine tasks, and 51% believe it will aid in the monitoring of employees in the workplace.
While many believe that AI will assist in certain aspects of their jobs, concerns persist regarding job retention. 56% of workers believe AI will lessen job prospects, 55% expect it to reduce working hours, and 51% predict it will decrease wages.
This survey coincides with the widespread popularity and usage of AI technology across numerous industries, bringing about worries regarding the unregulated nature of this rapidly evolving technology.
The two YouGov surveys were conducted from March 14-18 among 2,000 U.S. adults, with a margin of error of 4%.
